Finding the BEST High-End Face Primer

I own a lot of makeup and I wanted to find the best high-end primer that I own. Makeup can get expensive, so I wanted to test out each of my high-end face primers to see what was worth it and which was top tier.

While the prices listed aren’t what I paid, I wanted to keep it all similar so if you are comparing prices, you’re comparing full size prices. Some products that I own are the travel size but not each product comes in a travel size.

Keep reading to find which high-end primer ultimately won in my eyes.

The SEPHORA COLLECTION Smooth + Blur Primer retails on sephora.com at $16.00 for the full size where you get 1.01oz/30mL. On sephora.com, under what it is, it states, “A silky makeup primer that gives a soft-focused, blurred effect to reduce the appearance of pores, fine lines, and wrinkles.”

This primer has a slight tint that ends up making my skin darker. It reminds me of the two silicone primers that I tested in my drugstore version of this. Overall, it’s competitor went onto the next round.

The Tatcha The Liquid Silk Canvas: Featherweight Protective Primer retails on sephora.com at $54.00 for the full size where you get 1.0oz/30mL. On sephora.com, under what it is, it states, “A weightless liquid primer that protects skin from pollutants and makeup while helping your look go on better and last longer.”

This primer had a moisturizer like feeling on my skin. While this is a good primer, overall, its competitor went on to the next round.

The OLEHENRIKSEN Banana Bright Face Primer retails on sephora.com at $40.00 for the full size where you get 1.0oz/30mL. On sephora.com, under what it is, it states, “A vitamin C-infused, illuminating face primer with banana power-inspired pigments that delivers instant radiance while improving and extending makeup wear.”

This primer isn’t my favorite. I remember when this was all the talk. I thought I would like it. It has a lightweight feel but has a strong orange scent. I don’t really recommend this.

The Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Primer retails on sephora.com at $36.00 for the full size where you get 1.08oz/32mL. On sephora.com, under what it is, it states, “A shine-stopping, pore-diffusing primer that smooths the way for better foundation application and longer wear with an instant retouch effect.”

This product is good. When I had an oilier skin type, this was a go to. As my skin has become more on the normal side, this is a little drying. I ended up finishing up this primer while testing it out. For that reason, its competitor went onto the next round.

The StriVectin Line BlurFector Instant Wrinkle Blurring Face Primer retails on sephora.com at $39.00 for the full size where you get 1oz/30mL. On sephora.com, under what it is, it states, “A skincare-infused primer that instantly blurs the look of wrinkles and keeps makeup from setting in creases while prolonging makeup wear.”

This primer is a mix of a moisturizer and a silicone-based primer. In the first round, the makeup looked more skin like compared to its competitor. During the second round, it got beat out by its competitor where it came down to the fact that the StriVectin side looked drier at the end of the wear test.

The HUDA BEAUTY Water Jelly Hydrating Face Primer retails on sephora.com at $33.00 for the full size where you get 1.18oz/35mL. On sephora.com, under what it is, it states, “A face primer that quenches skin with a surge of moisture to create the perfect canvas for longer-lasting, flawless makeup.”

This primer is a nice lightweight primer. It has a water like feel. In the first round, my skin looked more skin like at the end of the wear test. During the second round, the overall census among others was that its competitor looked better.

The Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Pore Diffusing Primer – Always an Optimist Collection retails on sephora.com at $28.00 for the full size where you get 0.94oz/28mL. On sephora.com, under what it is, it states, “A hydrating, cushiony gel primer that blurs the look of pores and fine lines, boots and extends makeup wear, and helps fight shine all day.”

This primer is a good primer. While it does contain silicone-like ingredients, it doesn’t feel like your typical silicone primer. It has a thinner texture. Overall, in the third round, its competitor went on to the final round.

The Urban Decay All Nighter Face Primer retails on sephora.com at $38.00 for the full size where you get 1oz/30mL. On sephora.com, under what it is, it states, “A smoothing and hydrating face primer that grips foundation into place and supports its staying power, so your look lasts all day.”

This is one of my go-to primers. I have a travel size for when I travel in the hotter months. I discovered it in 2020 when we were all wearing masks and this paired with its setting spray, my makeup stayed all day working retail, teaching dance, and wearing a mask. I was shocked when its competitor ended up going to the final round.

The Hourglass Airbrush Primer retails on sephora.com at $58.00 for the full size where you get 1oz/30mL. On sephora.com, under what it is, it states, “A translucent skin-perfecting primer that smooths, absorbs shine, and adds a visibly blurred, airbrushed finish while extending makeup wear.”

I am shocked that this primer made it to the final round. While I do like the way it makes my makeup look at the end of the day, the packaging is not ideal. The pump is almost too small for how thick the product is. During every wear test, I wrote that the “pump clogs” and “difficult to pump out bottle.” In the end, I was willing to overlook the packaging for how good the actual product is.

THE WINNER!

The Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base Primer Moisturizer retails on sephora.com at $66.00 for the full size where you get 1.7oz/50mL. On sephora.com, under what it is, it states, “A bestselling, multivitamin-enriched primer that nourishes, visibly plumps, and preps skin with healthy hydration to improve the look of foundation.”

I was shocked that this primer ultimately won. It was always a primer that was in the back of my mind. I secretly hoped that this wouldn’t win as it is the most expensive primer I own. Overall, it gave me all that I wanted in a primer.

Let me know, should I do a final test of the drugstore winner and the high-end winner? That test would interest me the most.
